When we fail to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect,
we all suffer.
Since 1977, the Child
Abuse Council has been working towards its mission
to stop abuse that is occurring, prevent abuse
before it occurs and rebuild the child and family
after abuse. Through our programs, parents receive
hands-on training, support and the information
needed to face the many challenges and pleasures
of raising healthy, happy and well adjusted children.
Sadly,
Hillsborough County perpetually ranks amongst the highest
in the state for the most reported and confirmed cases
of child abuse and neglect. The Child Abuse Council’s
treatment programs are created in direct response
to the critical needs of these children and families.
Prevention and education programs
are designed to reach out to both parents at-risk for violent
behavior, and parents who just need a helping hand.
Specially designed treatment
programs offer abused and neglected children loving, therapeutic
care while their parents receive intensive training and
counseling. Education and prevention programs offer services
such as home visits, workshops, support groups and developmental
playgroups to engage families early on to help parents
enhance their parenting skills, as well as their children’s
physical, social and intellectual development.
As an accredited agency, we
operate in accordance with nationally defined best practice
standards and consistently strive to deliver superior services
to our children and families. Each year, our highly trained
and educated staff strengthens more and more families throughout
the county providing valuable and measurable services that
help children grow and reach their fullest potential.
When we fail as a community
to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, we all suffer.
Tragically, abused children often grow up to become abusers
themselves. Abused children also suffer from higher rates
of death, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, school
failure, domestic violence, crime, and mental health disorders.
Together, we can prevent the
tragic cycle of child abuse and neglect in this community.
